In 1956, Carmela and Gennaro Sbarro opened the doors to their Italian salumeria in Brooklyn. Carmela “Mama” Sbarro made pizza slices for shift workers looking for a quick meal. Her slices were so popular that they soon opened a second location focused solely on pizza. Since then, Sbarro has brought the best pasta, salad, and of course the XL NY slice to 630 eateries across 28 countries. You’re welcome, world.

Good question: Suh-Bar-Oh –but some simply call us “The Best XL NY Pizza to ever be sold”.

WHO FOUNDED SBARRO?

Gennaro and Carmela “Mama” Sbarro in 1956. The couple and their three sons, Joseph, Mario, and Anthony, immigrated to America from Naples, Italy.

WHO OWNS SBARRO?

Sbarro is a privately-owned by Sbarro Holdings, LLC.

In 1956, the Sbarro family opened their first salumeria (an Italian grocery store) at 1701 65th Street and 17th Avenue in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, New York, which became popular for its fresh food and Italian fare. Its original location closed down in 2004. The success of the Sbarro Salumeria led to the opening of additional locations in the New York City metropolitan area. In 1970, Sbarro opened its first mall-based restaurant in Brooklyn’s Kings Plaza Shopping Center, which is still open today.
